Submission Template & Guidelines

    • Language: English, Arabic and Malay.
    • Word count: 6,000–8,000 words (articles).
    • Review process: Double-blind peer review.
    • Formatting: IMRaD-friendly (where applicable).
    • Ethics: COPE-compliant, plagiarism-free.

The Journal of Progressive Islam (JoPI) publishes articles primarily in English, with a few in Malay. Manuscripts written in Malay or Arabic must include the title, abstract, and keywords in English.

All submissions must comply with Journal style as outlined in JoPI Guidelines to authors. We do strongly encourage authors to write concisely and to adhere to the JoPI Guidelines or APA style.

Authors must ensure that any paper submitted to JoPI is not simultaneously under consideration elsewhere in any form, whether electronic or printed. Additionally, submitted papers must not have been previously published. Submissions are accepted electronically only.

The corresponding author has to be designated as the first author with contact details.

The Editor-in-Chief may decline a manuscript for several reasons, including:

    • Language: English, Arabic and Malay.
    • Word count: 6,000–8,000 words (articles).
    • Review process: Double-blind peer review.
    • Formatting: IMRaD-friendly (where applicable).
    • Ethics: COPE-compliant, plagiarism-free.

In the case of conflicting editorial opinions, the Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to make the final decision.

Once a manuscript is accepted for review, it will be assigned to the Editorial Board, which will forward it to relevant reviewers. All articles undergo a double-blind peer review by experts in the field. The final decision on acceptance lies with the JoPI Editorial Board.

Submissions should include the following information:

Title:

    • Title case only.
    • Concise, clear, and reflects the core theme of the study related to Islamic or Muslim issues.

Author(s) Full Name(s):

    • Highest Level of Education.
    • Affiliation(s).
    • Institution(s).
    • Mailing Address.
    • Corresponding Email.
    • ORCID iD. 
*The maximum number of authors allowed is four.

Abstract:

    • 150-250 words.
    • Brief introduction to the research topic.
    • Objective or purpose of the study.
    • Methodology overview.
    • Major findings.
    • Significance of the research.

Keywords:

    • 4-6 keywords separated by commas.
    • Arranged in the alphabetical order.

Text:

    • Main body of the text consists of: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Findings and Discussion, and Conclusion.
    • The Turnitin Similarity Score must be less than 15% and AI range less than 10%.
    • The text submitted must be in Microsoft Word format.
    • The Author-Date citation system should be used.
    • The word count must be less than 7,000 words.
    • Footnotes and endnotes are not allowed.
    • *Check for grammatical errors and ensure proper English usage before submission.

1. Introduction:

    • Background of the study within the context of progressive Islamic Thought. 
    • Research problem and objectives.
    • Importance and significance of the study.
    • Research questions or hypothesis.

2. Literature Review:

    • Review of past studies and scholarly work related to the topic. 
    • Theoretical framework (if any). 
    • Gaps identified in the existing literature.

3. Methodolgy:

    • Research design. 
    • Data collection methods. 
    • Analytical approach.

4. Findings and Discussion:

    • Presentation of findings supported by Islamic textual references. 
    • Critical analysis and interpretation. 
    • Discussion within the framework of progressive Islamic Thought, principles, and worldview. 
    • Comparison with previous research.

5. Conclusion:

    • Summary of major findings. 
    • Implications for Islamic studies or contemporary issues. 
    • Recommendations for further research.

Acknowledgement:

If any, to individuals, groups, or institutions or research funders, that contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship.

Conflict of Interest Statements

The authors must disclose whether they have any personal, financial, or professional relationships that could bias—or be perceived to bias—the research, analysis, or conclusions presented in the paper.

Authors’ Contributions Statement

The authors must declare their specific role in the research and writing process of the article. State who came up with the research idea or framework; gathered or curated the data; did the technical/statistical/experimental work; wrote the initial manuscript; revised and polished the manuscript; oversaw the project, or; secured grants or financial support.

Ethics Statement 

The authors must declare how they ensured their research followed ethical standards and guidelines.

References:

    • In-text Citation: Use APA Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA)in-text citation style by stating the author’s last name/surname and the year of publication, for example (Ahmad 2019). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example (Ahmad 2019: 23). Footnotes and endnotes are not allowed.
    • All references cited in the text must appear in the Reference list. We do not accept Bibliography.
    • References should be arranged in alphabetical order by authors’ last names. Sources without authors are arranged alphabetically by title within the same list.
    • Arabic References: All references should be transliterated and arranged in alphabetical order. And should be Romanized. The word ‘al’ of the author’s surname is not regarded as the first letter. Thus, the author, al-Qaradhawi should be placed under alphabet Q category.
    • All references other than those in English must be kept in their original language and translated into English.
