Aims

Journal of Progressive Islam (JoPI) seeks to promote intellectually rigorous research that engages Islamic tradition with contemporary realities, global challenges, and evolving Muslim societies. JoPI aims to:

    • Foster constructive renewal (tajdid) and independent reasoning (ijtihad) grounded in Islamic epistemology.
    • Bridge classical Islamic knowledge with modern intellectual, social, and scientific developments.
    • Encourage interdisciplinary and policy-relevant scholarship on Islam and Muslim communities.
    • Provide a platform for diverse global Muslim voices, especially from underrepresented regions.
    • Contribute meaningfully to academic discourse, public policy, and ethical debate.

Scope

Journal of Progressive Islam (JoPI) welcomes original contributions in, but not limited to, the following areas:

Islamic Thought & Ethics:

    • Contemporary Qur’anic interpretation and hermeneutics.
    • Hadith studies and methodological renewal.
    • Islamic theology (kalam), philosophy, and ethics.
    • Maqasid al-Shariah and applied moral reasoning.

Islamic Law, Reform & Governance:

    • Fiqh reform and legal reasoning in modern contexts.
    • Islamic law and constitutional systems.
    • Human rights, citizenship, and pluralism.
    • Governance, public policy, and Islamic institutions

Muslim Societies & Cultural Change:

    • Muslim minorities and diaspora studies.
    • Gender, family, and social transformation.
    • Youth, media, digital religion, and identity.
    • Sociology and anthropology of Muslim communities.

Islam, Science & Contemporary Challenges:

    • Islamic bioethics and public health.
    • Islam and artificial intelligence (AI).
    • Environmental ethics and sustainability.

Global & Comparative Perspectives:

    • Islam in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
    • Post-colonial and decolonial Islamic studies.
    • Interfaith dialogue and comparative religion.
